I'm sure you've seen the mustache craze going around. While mustaches are nothing new to this family - all the cowboys we know sport some sort of mustache, and my uncle could play the role of a grizzly mountain man - teenagers near and far are sporting 'staches everywhere!
This weekend was one of my daughter's best friend's birthdays and she wanted to do something special for her. She decided that she would make a cake (you see where this is going don't you?) and a special hand-made card. Of course, the cake needed to be at school Friday morning, and my daughter had a football game Thursday night. So once I put two and two together, I happily made the cake and left it for her to decorate when she got home.
I know what you are thinking from looking at the photos above - BLASPHEMY! Yes, a cake was made at the Cookshack, in the Magic Oven, FROM A MIX!!! But when you see the next set of photos, you'll understand WHY.
My daughter found a photo somewhere online of a multi-colored cake and decided THAT would be the cake she made for her friend. So I separated the batter and mixed in some food coloring. Can I just tell you that there is something psychological about eating purple cake mix that makes me think it tastes....well, disgusting.
After looking at the cake batter splattered and swirled in the cake pan, I thought there is NO way this is going to work. Not only does it LOOK disgusting, all those colors are going to bake together into ONE. BIG. BLOB!
When my daughter got home, she was beyond excited and it was all I could do to keep her from cutting into the baked, but un-frosted, cake. She went ahead and frosted it, and here is the final product:
Her friend was SO excited and the text I received was, "I thought she was going to have a heart attack!"
The cake and card were a huge success and it baked up just fine. Actually it baked up so well, my daughter now wants one for her 17th birthday!

ReplyDeleteI thought you'd enjoy that!
ReplyDeleteOh I just love this!! I have been making my kids cakes like this for years. It is weird at first you really have to make yourself think about the way it taste not looks lol!! But they sure are pretty!!!
ReplyDeleteI had never made one - the kids love it and now Annie wants hers to be like that next year. Of course, that will probably change by June! I'd like to try it with varying shades of one color....have you tried that before?
